As part of the series ‘Tailored Research Data Management Training for Agricultural Scientists’ in cooperation between FAIRagro, the Consortium for the Agrosystems Research Community of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and the Research Data Service of the University of Kassel, an in-depth workshop on Data documentation was held at 10th of December 2024, which specifically addressed the special features for agricultural scientists.

In this in-depth workshop, participants learned why and how properly documenting their data can benefit them and their future research life, as well as others. The key questions were answered:

Why Data Documentation?

What to Document?

Which Method for Data Documentation?

Which tools are usable for Documentation?

How to increase metadata interoperability?

Therefore, we covered methods such as README files, data dictionaries, commented code, metadata and metadata standards, tools such as electronic lab notebooks and electronic field books, and concepts such as persistent identifiers and controlled vocabularies. We also took a closer look at examples of particular interest to agricultural researchers, such as MIAPPE and AGROVOC.

This publication is intended to enable the subsequent use of the teaching materials and includes this README file, which also functions as a navigation aid for the individual files. The Teachingscript (in German only), helps with the conception, division of labour and timing of the introductory lecture. This and the presentation slides are available in various formats for easy reuse.

Metadata Guide for agrosystem scienceThis practical guide to collecting metadata in agricultural research provides an easy, practical introduction to data documentation. It offers a straightforward, generic, working-level overview of the needs, issues, and processes related to metadata collection and creation in research. FAIRagro adapted the guide to the typical data types in agrosystem research. This guide can be used in combination with an interactive decision tree to clarify personal working steps for proper data documentation.

In this first interactive workshop, participants learned why and how publishing their data can benefit them and their future research life. We gave an overview of where agricultural research data can be published, how to find a suitable repository and what legal aspects to consider. For a practical example, we gave a live demonstration of the publication process in the BonaRes repository. This publication is intended to enable the subsequent use of the teaching materials and includes this README file, which also functions as a navigation aid for the individual files. Research Data Management for Agrosystem Sciences - Modular Training Material for ReuseThis is an extensive Open Educational Resource (OER) comprising training materials designed to help you plan, create and conduct training events on Research Data Management (RDM) for agrosystem science researchers. These resources include presentation slides, presenter notes, teaching scripts with learning objectives, worksheets and a recording of an RDM training session, as well as a guide on how to create a training session. All resources are structured and described in accordance with the EduBrick concept, whereby the teaching resources are broken down into the smallest didactic unit, called 'Bricks', which can be used to create targeted learning/teaching units for training events tailored to the respective needs. To enhance reusability, all materials are provided in multiple formats and are openly licensed. We also provide an example of how the Bricks could be used to create a four-hour online training course, including a teaching script, presentation slides, worksheets and a video recording of the training course. Intended Use This publication is designed to: Enable flexible reuse and recombination Support trainers in different institutional contexts Facilitate adaptation to specific target groups Encourage collaborative use without structural modification The modular design ensures that content can be tailored to specific formats, disciplines, and levels of expertise while maintaining didactical coherence. How to Use This publication includes three 7z files, each of which contains a complex folder structure with over 270 individual files. Therefore, we recommend 1) first reviewing the READ ME file, which provides information about the content and structure of the training material. 2) You can also look at the "How to Create a Training" file for detailed instructions on how to create a training using this material. 3) Then, decide which format you prefer (Microsoft Office if you want to use PowerPoint; LibreOffice if you want to use open-source solutions like LibreOffice Impress; or PDF if you want to use this format, but be aware that these don't include presentation notes). 4) Download the respective .7z file and unpack it using 7-Zip (recommended), Zip, or another suitable tool by right-clicking on the file. 5) Make sure the files are sorted by name - regardless of file type (if your system allows that). Trainingsmaterial: Introduction to research data management in agricultural sciencesAs part of the series ‘Tailored Research Data Management Training for Agricultural Scientists’ in cooperation between FAIRagro, the Consortium for the Agrosystems Research Community of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and the Research Data Service of the University of Kassel an introductory lecture on the basic principles of research data management was held at 9th of July 2024, which specifically addressed the special features for agricultural scientists. The workshop was specifically aimed at researchers from the Faculty of Ecological Agricultural Sciences at the University of Kassel. In this first introductory lecture, participants learned why and how the conscious management and publication of their data can be beneficial for them and their future research life. Therefore, we first gave an overview of the most important aspects of handling research data. Participants were familiarised with the general concepts of research data management (RDM) and learned which tools and services can help to manage agricultural research data throughout its lifecycle. We gave insights into FAIRagro's work on a data infrastructure that makes agricultural systems research data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). We also presented tools and services that the University of Kassel provides for its researchers. After this introductory session, participants were invited to vote for up to two topics from the FDM that they would like to learn more about. Metadata in agrosystem research practiceThis practical guide to collecting metadata in agricultural research aims to provide an easy and practice-oriented introduction to the world of data documentation. A decision tree guides researchers with simple, practical questions through the topics: 1 Why data should be documented; 2 Which forms and formats are appropriate for data documentation in your own project; 3 Which metadata should be collected for your own research data; 4 How the metadata can be created; 5 Which forms of storage and linking with the research data should be considered; and 6 How the quality of the metadata can be ensured. In addition to the decision tree, this document also contains brief explanations of terms (Appendix I) that should be understood in order to answer the questions in the decision tree meaningfully. In addition, a metadata guide (Appendix II) with many agricultural science examples provides an overview of metadata, metadata schemas, terminologies and various forms of metadata collection and storage. Internal links in the decision tree refer to specific term explanations or further explanations in the metadata guide. The decision tree and the explanation of terms are available in German and English. For a proper reusability, both versions (German and english) are available in different formats (odt, docx, pdf).
