Description

In NFDI4Biodiversity, we developed a self-paced online course on research data management for both students and researchers specializing in biodiversity and environmental sciences. This course is based on the online course HeFDI Data OER: Forschungsdatenmanagement - eine Online-Einführung (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6373596) of the Hessian Research Data Infrastructures (HeFDI, https://www.uni-marburg.de/en/hefdi). Developed in collaboration between several partners within NFDI4Biodiversity, this course offers essential domain-specific knowledge in research data management.

We offer this course in different formats to facilitate accessibility and re-usability:

Here, we additionally offer import files to use this course in your local Ilias or Moodle. If you are using a different learning management system (LMS) or if you want to adapt the course, you are free to clone the corresponding GitHub repository, adapt the course, and export it in a format suitable to your needs.

Please note the following characteristics (different from GitHub sourced online version):

  • SCORM1.2 format
  • mastery score 100 – learners need to achieve 100% correct answers in all questions. You can change this value in the Ilias/Moodle course settings after importing the course, or during the LiaScript export.
  • Unlimited trials to answer questions correctly, but no solution button

  • Prerequisites - No previous knowledge is required for this course. The chapters build on each other thematically but can also be worked through individually. If information from other chapters is needed, they are linked.
  • Target audience - Graduate students, PhD students, and researchers in the field of biology and environmental sciences, especially those working with biodiversity data, who are looking for a first introduction to research data management.
  • Learning objectives - After completing this self-paced course, you will be able to understand the content and purpose of research data management and apply it in the field of biology. The detailed learning objectives are given at the beginning of each chapter.
  • Content - If you prefer to read, you can access the content of this unit through the text only. However, the embedded videos offer further access to the topic, so those who work well with video explanations will find the content presented here in a different way.
  • Duration - If you concentrate on reading all the texts, you can expect to spend about 4-5 hours on the course. If you also watch the videos or follow the links, you will need more time. And remember to take breaks.
  • Licensing – This course is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). Please note that third-party content remains under its original licenses or copyright.

Privacy:

  • Embedded videos – Videos from YouTube are embedded in this course. When the videos are called up, Google/YouTube uses, processes and possibly passes on cookies and other data. Information on data protection and terms of use of the service can be found following the link. The use of the online course requires corresponding consent.
  • Google Translate - This course uses Google Translate to translate content into different languages. Please note that when you use this function, data is transmitted to Google and processed there. Further information can be found in Google's Privacy Policy. However, translation is not necessary to use this course.

Chemistry-specific README template for data publicationsThe practice of publishing data alongside a research article, or even as a standalone publication, is becoming increasingly common in the chemistry community. While there are many chemistry-specific repositories, which allow for the storage of chemistry-specific metadata (to a different extent), most data are published in more generic repositories now. Very common repositories are Zenodo, institutional repositories and RADAR4Chem. The ability to provide chemistry-specific metadata is often limited in these repositories. In addition, we noticed that the good practice of providing a README file which describes the provenance of the data is not often used. To support researchers with these two challenges, we have created this README template, which can be completed and added to one's own data publication. We encourage researchers to adapt and reuse the content for their own purposes. Furthermore, we want to encourage them to help to improve this template by adding content, e.g. specific method sections or suggestions for improvements, to our GitHub Repository at https://github.com/NFDI4Chem/Chemistry-specific_README_template_data_publications. New versions of the template will be published in GitHub and Zenodo using the versioning features, and all changes to the template will be documented.

DMP Writing Made Easy: A Hands-on Workshop for ChemistsThis Open Educational Resource (OER) is part of the Data Management Plan (DMP) workshop, "DMP Writing Made Easy: A Hands-on Workshop for Chemists," which was developed by the Chemistry Consortium of the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany (NFDI4Chem). The workshop was first offered online on January 21, 2026. The workshop concept was developed as an incubator project of NFDI4Chem during the integration phase of the NFDI basic service on data management plans (DMP4NFDI). This publication directly contributes to the deliverable 2.1, "Concept for outreach support," of the DMP4NFDI integration phase proposal. The workshop materials intended for reuse by others consist of a set of slides used during the workshop, including comprehensive speaker notes and additional reading material, a detailed concept for conducting the workshop, and a README file.

FAIR Chemistry Data: A Research Data Management Workshop ConceptThis open educational resource (OER) is based on the workshop 'FAIR Research Data Management: Basics for Chemists', which has been delivered over 40 times to more than 800 participants within the NFDI4Chem framework since 2022. NFDI4Chem is the chemistry consortium of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. The workshop introduces the fundamentals of research data management (RDM) to researchers working in chemistry and related disciplines, and therefore includes many examples specific to chemistry. We demonstrate how good RDM can be applied in practice, highlighting chemistry-specific features and introducing relevant tools and services. The target group is primarily early career researchers, such as doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Our workshop concept is intended for reuse, adaptation and further development by instructors, trainers, and educators from different institutions and (chemistry-related) disciplines. The workshop concept package includes a modularised slide deck in both NFDI4Chem and plain designs, including comprehensive speaker notes and additional reading material, an introduction file, a detailed training concept file, a file describing the exercises and several example files. Together, these provide conceptual input, RDM knowledge and interactive elements that can be combined, modified or expanded according to specific learning objectives, target groups and the time available. Forschungsdatenmanagement lernen, anwenden und weitergebenWelches Wissen braucht es eigentlich für den Einstieg ins Forschungsdatenmanagement? Und wie klappt FDM im Alltag und bleibt nicht nur ein guter Vorsatz? NFDI4Biodiversity fördert die Datenkompetenz bei Forschenden, Lehrenden und Studierenden mit einem breiten Angebot an Bildungsangeboten und Ressourcen. Von kurzen Einführungen über praxisnahe Workshops bis hin zur einwöchigen Seasonal School: Es gibt etwas für alle Ebenen – ob gerade erst am Anfang oder schon in der praktischen Anwendung und bereit für eine Weiterentwicklung. Zusätzlich stehen umfangreiche, frei zugängliche Materialien online bereit: digitale Lernmodule, interaktive Jupyter Notebooks, Videos und der Podcast Rechtsdschungel. Alle Inhalte sind mit offenen Lizenzen nutzbar, anpassbar und weiterverteilbar. Sie decken den gesamten Lebenszyklus von Forschungsdaten ab – von der Planung und Datenerhebung über transparente Analysen bis zur Archivierung. Insbesondere die Selbstlerneinheit erlaubt es, sich dem Thema Datenmanagement in der Biologischen Forschung im eigenen Tempo zu nähern. Sie wird sukzessive erweitert, und bietet die Möglichkeit zum Mitentwickeln. Juliane Röder zeigt, wie Sie die Ressourcen einfach finden, nutzen und sogar gemeinsam weiterentwickelen können – für eine nachhaltige, FAIR-orientierte Forschungspraxis.

Datenschutz auf dem Silbertablett - Don`t panic! Survival Guide on Law and Ethics in Research Episode I - TrainingsmaterialIm Rahmen der Legal Training Series „Don’t panic! Survival guide for Law and Ethics in Research”, organisiert von FAIRagro, NFDI4Biodiversity und NFDI4Earth, wurde vom 08. – 10.04.25 die erste Episode, Datenschutz auf dem Silbertablett, von Lea Singson und Sophie Boße durchgeführt: „Du sammelst Proben auf landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flächen, du nutzt Drohnenaufnahmen, auf denen auch Menschen zu sehen sind, du nimmst im Park Vogelstimmen auf und erwischt dabei ein paar Gespräche oder du möchtest Interviews mit Landwirt*innen oder Anwohnenden führen. Dabei ist eins klar: Wo Menschen sind, ist die Datenschutzgrundverordnung (DSGVO) nicht weit! Doch was will die DSGVO eigentlich und was hat das mit Dir zu tun? Musst Du datenschutzrechtliche Aspekte überhaupt beachten? In dieser Einheit arbeiten wir gemeinsam durch die praktisch relevanten Aspekte des Themas Datenschutz! Wir klären was die DSGVO ist, für welche Art der Daten sie anwendbar ist und was in diesem Fall getan werden muss. Dabei unterstützen wir dich unter anderem dabei zu lernen, informierte Einwilligungen, bzw. Datenschutzerklärungen zu verfassen, die auch verständlich sind. Wir zeigen, wie du datenschutzrechtlich relevante Datenverarbeitungen beurteilen und begründen kannst und diskutieren, wie Forschungsdaten gerettet werden können, wenn die eingeholte Einwilligung widerrufen wird.“ An dieser Stelle werden sowohl die Aufzeichnungen der nicht interaktiven Teile der Online-Workshops als auch alle verwendeten Trainingsmaterialien zur Verfügung gestellt. Zielgruppe dieser Veröffentlichung sind sowohl Personen, die eigenständig Inhalte zum Thema Datenschutz erlernen möchten, als auch Trainer:innen, die Konzept und Materialien der Workshops vollständig oder teilweise nachnutzen möchten. Das Lehrdrehbuch hilft bei der Konzeption von Veranstaltung und gibt einen Überblick über Themen, Lernziele und Zeitplanung des Workshops. Darüber hinaus sind Präsentationsfolien inklusive Vortragsnotizen, Arbeitsblätter und zentrale Linksdokumente, die mit den Teilnehmenden in Online-Workshops geteilt werden können verfügbar, die zur Nachnutzung angepasst werden können und sollten.
