About
NFDI4Biodiversity is a network of around 50 actors who have one thing in common: collecting and working with biodiversity data. In addition to research institutions, the consortium’s partners include associations, natural history societies, state offices, civil society initiatives and other institutions from the field of nature conservation. The aim is to develop a joint approach to making biodiversity data available for research and practice. Biodiversity here means more than just the recording of the diversity of species; it includes genotypic, phenotypic and functional diversity as well as interaction of species, populations and ecosystems. Accordingly, there is a wide range of data that needs to be made accessible in order to be able to answer the urgent questions about changes in the environment. This is where NFDI4Biodiversity takes up the challenge: the consortium offers its users services that enable them to better secure data, organise it across institutions, publish it – and thus make it reusable. NFDI4Biodiversity benefits from the preliminary work of the German Federation for Biological Data (GFBio), an association of scientific institutions and data centres that has been developing services for scientists in biology, ecology and biodiversity research for more than eight years. In NFDI4Biodiversity, the number of actors and services is expanding; in addition, the consortium is increasingly focusing on the use of cloud technologies.

Introduction to research data managementSlides for a 60 min presentation on basic aspects of research data management. The first part discusses motivations and solutions for improved research data management specific for ecological and biodiversity data. The second part gives an overview of simple, hands-on improvements of research data management along the data life cycle. Many of the discipline specific tools and services presented in the talk are provided by the NFDI4Biodiversity consortium. Included is also an overview of generic tools and services provided by the local eResearch Center of the Philipps University of Marburg in close collaboration with the Hessian Research Data Infrastructures (HeFDI).

Wir beleuchten die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und Herausforderungen, die sich aus diesen Regelwerken ergeben. Von nationaler Seite aus betrachtet die Diskussion die Umsetzung des Umweltinformationsgesetzes (UIG) und die damit verbundenen Anforderungen an Institutionen, z.B. in Bezug auf die Lieferung von Firmendaten an Landesämter. Internationale Regelwerke spielen ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle. Dabei wird über internationale Abkommen und Vereinbarungen informiert, die die Erhebung und den Austausch von Umweltdaten zwischen Ländern regeln.

Publishing Research Data in Open Access RepositoriesTwo lectures presented at the GfÖ & NFDI4Biodiversity Winter School on Data Management in Ecology and Environmental Science December 5-9, 2022. Winter School LecturesThe Winter School aimed on Early-Career-Researcher (ECR´s) with a background in biodiversity and environmental science and took place in December 2022. It was a collaborative event between the Ecological Society (GfÖ) and the consortium NFDI4Biodiversity within the National Research Data Infrastructure Germany (NFDI). Episode 4 - Institutionelle PerspektiveIn unserer vierten Episode beleuchten wir die komplexe Landschaft der Verfügungsrechte an Daten und die damit verbundenen rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Wir untersuchen, wie sich diese Rechte zwischen Universitäten, Verbänden oder Behörden unterscheiden. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt darauf wer letztendlich, unter Berücksichtigung der Beschäftigungsverhältnisse, über die Daten verfügen darf. Des Weiteren diskutieren wir die Bedeutung von Forschungsdatenpolicies und deren Wirksamkeit aus rechtlicher Sicht und erörtern verschiedene Möglichkeiten, den Umgang mit Daten zu regeln, insbesondere im Kontext von kooperativen Projekten um klare Regelungen zu schaffen und potenzielle Konflikte zu vermeiden. Hierbei stehen Kooperationsverträge, sowie Datenüberlassungs- und Datennutzungsverträge im Fokus.
